12/31/07 Just in case you didn't notice the holiday schedule on our contact us page and try to contact us today, we are closed, will not be in the office and will not be answering the phones. Shipping carriers are only offering very limited shipping today and none for 1/1/2008. Most wig manufacturers are also doing inventory and also have given many sales reps some needed vacation. Because of these factors seriously limiting our ability to function, we decided to close. This of course means there will unfortunately be a delay in the processing of orders. Please bear with us, we apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.
12/11/07 I've been doing lots of updates and changes to the site. Many images that have been around for a long time have been replaced by much cleaner images that are of a more consistent size. What was happening is some of the grid and list views were showing either pixelated or odd sized images. I have gone in and removed all the ones that were a tad too small and when the browser tried to scale them to the correct size they would turn out very grainy. That has been fixed but some of automatically created images are not of the proper views of the wigs. So we will be going through and checking every single image on the site to make sure they are proper. Next I changed the popularity lists on the main page of the site. It used to show the top 5 best selling wigs and top 5 most valued wigs. Now it shows smaller images but more specific groups like, top long wigs and top selling collections etc. I had been playing around with the ideas for this area for some time. I always felt that the lists needed to be grouped into sets that would be more toward what someone would actually be looking for. Like just the short wigs etc.
11/15/07 Well, another one of those humbling moments occurred this morning. We enter updated information into our "notify customer of order status" area and it records it and sends out an email to the customer. Somehow I overlooked a problem with the order status notice. It stated it was being sent from Alternatives 2000. Back in July of 2006 Onthetop.com and Alternatives 2000 became 2 separate companies. When the websites were split countless things had to be updated to the correct names. We use the order status notification area daily. We received an email from a customer that was replying to an email our system sent to them. It clearly showed it was sent from Alternatives 2000 and not Onthetop.com. It has been corrected. We apologize for any confusion this may have been causing our customers. Mike
10/6/07 I just discovered an issue in the user accounts area. The when you enter your shipping address and click save and you've entered United States for your country, the address you entered is sent to the USPS website to verify that the address is a valid address according to the US Postal Service. It turns out if you enter an invalid zip code they return an error and our system records that the address did not validate. When viewing a shopping cart or checkout the information about the weight and address are sent to obtain the shipping charges. The issue is that an invalid zip code causes an error to be returned by the USPS website. That error is currently not handled correctly because the code provided assumed that the zip code has been validated. So until I can figure out the changes needed in the code to correctly detect the error, please make sure you enter a valid zip code.
10/2/07 Mike here. Just thought I'd leave a note so you know we are still here. I've been working on several projects behind the scenes. I have more time to work on more visible things now so you will begin to see some changes coming.
9/17/07 Well, we were off the air from about 12:30pm yesterday until 8:15am this morning. The entire area lost Internet due to a failure in a piece of equipment at the phone company. Apparently they were having difficulties getting it working again. The estimated time to complete the repairs should have been last night at 11:30pm but it took nearly 9 hours longer. Hopefully there won't be any further interruptions in service.
8/31/07 Hi all, Mike here. I uncovered a strange issue with the Redtag site. It was only bringing up wigs that are best on Oblong face shapes. Once I realized the problem was there, I quickly found an oops in the programming. I was using the term faceshape for more than one purpose. Once in the creation of the left side menus near the bottom and in the results list of wigs. It was as if someone had clicked on the Oblong faceshape link for every search. Because I had done a bunch of cleanup on the programming code, it made it quite easy to find the error. All seems well now.
8/16/07 Mike here again. This morning early I discovered a solution to a problem we had been having for quite some time. When you add something to a shopping cart, there is a cookie that is set so as you continue shopping you can add other items to the same cart. The problem was that we have several websites and sharing the cookie was causing a warning message. However after my usual reading I found a setting I had not seen before that makes the cookie work between our websites. The result of all this is a warning message on our secure site that asked if you wanted to display non-secure items is now gone. Another thing off the list.
7/30/07 Mike here. Funny how you can look at something countless times and then that one time you question it and find out something has been wrong with it the whole time. Today was one of those days. Turns out the shopping carts had a misspelling in them for 8 years! That's enough to make one feel foolishly humble. The heading Product Category was spelled "Catagory". Countless people have seen this for a very long time and it wasn't noticed. Hmmm. Well, it's correct now.
7/25/07 I've made some major improvements to the My Account area. The appearance is much better but there still needs to be work done on some portions. One of the ideas that I got working was to have the instructions for each entry item of information appear when needed and then disappear when not needed. This makes the forms much shorter and less intimidating. This worked great until you try to submit the form. It was causing the submit button to move up the page as the instructions were removed. This caused the actual click on the button to be below the button on the page somewhere so you'd have to move the mouse to the button and click it again. I made this behavior go away by not removing the instructions if the mouse was over the submit button when clicked. Problem solved.
7/8/07 We've been spending a fair amount of time working on visual and functional improvements to our websites. At this point, there are still some odd "artifacts" that show up in strange places. We have pages of ideas and improvements as well as a list of these artifacts. The list is getting much shorter and the items are being worked on based on their importance. Some items are quite involved so it takes time to get to everything. One of our innovative navigation design ideas will really improve the ease of finding what you are looking for. Unfortunately, it is too far ahead of it's time and will have to wait. Those that have tried the prototype pages have really reacted with "Shock & Awe". While the "Awe" part is really fulfilling, the "Shock" part can be a serious issue. It is just too revolutionary at this point and the reality of having a commercial website is that it be easy to use and that the learning curve is short.
6/29/07 With some doing, I was able to work through the countless issues with using Firefox and Netscape on the website. What a pain! So now you have a greater choice of browsers to use on our sites! I know this will make those that use those browsers much happier. For those that care about the technical details, Mozilla type browsers (Firefox & Netscape) were treating the DIV tag like an IN-LINE element instead of a BLOCK element. This would cause sections of the site to display side by side instead of one on top of the next. What you would see is paragraphs of text overlapping some of the left menus instead of being shown below the menus for example. Mike.
6/22/07 Mike here again, I'm not sure if it is clear to everyone that you have a choice of checkout methods when placing an order. You can either choose to checkout with or without creating an Account. With an Account checkout becomes a snap! If you are logged in during checkout, you simply review your order and then it's one click to submit your order. Another important thing about creating an account is entry errors are reduced which cause delays in processing orders. Your email address can be confirmed and your shipping address is verified with the US Postal Service to make sure there are no typos etc. This can really speed up order processing by preventing delays ahead of time. There are those that prefer not to create accounts for their own reasons so we also have the 1 page, 3 step checkout. Enter all of your information on 1 page, click to review your order, and click again to submit your order for processing. Whichever method you prefer, you now have the control.
6/20/07 Hello everyone Karen here, there have been some price changes. In May USPS (United States Postal Service) raised their prices. As you have seen reflected in shipping costs on your orders. Due to the rising costs of shipping the suppliers have also raised their prices. We are trying to keep our prices as low as we can for you.
6/15/07 - Hi all! I've been reorganizing the All About Wigs area. Many of the areas were written quite some time ago and the information was spread out making it harder than it needed to be to find what you were looking for. As always, the websites are a work in progress. Hope you like the improvements. Mike
6/12/07 - Mike here, we are making small changes to the My Accounts area as well as the Checkout area. We are aware of a couple of orders that came through with no contact information (no email address, no name, no phone number etc). The code that allowed the chance of this happening has been corrected. However, there is always the chance of some other strange circumstance that will lead to an order problem. If you happen to run into a problem or do not receive verification of your order by email, please contact us by phone or email to verify your was received correctly.
6/3/07 - Mike again, we had a problem with our email hosting service. Apparently one of the servers was having random issues with mail getting stuck. They found out whatever the problem was and we received a flood of older emails. A few were dated as far back as 5/7/07. This is frustrating because we did not know anything about the stuck emails. Our apologies to those that sent us emails and didn't get timely responses. We simply didn't know until today that we hadn't received them. We have attempted to contact each and every person whose email was just received today.
5/29/07 - Mike here. Well, after months of work modifying our system we now have a My Account site. The site is secure and allows you to either use the old checkout stand without logging in or your user account for a super quick checkout. You can check your order status, change your payment information etc. When you create your user account and enter your information, the system will verify your email, shipping address etc.
2/28/07 - Mike here. We've been making lots of changes. So many I have neglected the What's New?. My apologies.
2/23/07 - Mike again. We have decided to focus our attention on Daily Wear Women's Wigs. So, we have taken down the Halloween Wigs site. It was a decision that we needed to make. We enjoyed offering them while we could. Our suppliers were no longer able to meet the needs of our customers. Since our commitment to our customers is more important than our commitment to our suppliers, we could not tolerate the issues they were causing us and our customers.
1/15/07 - There have been lots of updates made to most of the collections for the new year.
